Avery Harshman

I am a Temporary Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Iowa in 2012 and my Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Bethel Seminary in 2016. My practicum hours were completed at Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge in Minneapolis, MN as part of their mental health department.

During my practicum at Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge, I provided individual, marital and group counseling. I was fortunate to have a rich experience that allowed me to work with a variety of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, loss, change, spiritual struggles, addiction and social difficulties. I have counseled women through relationship issues as part of a counseling team at church. I have a passion for helping couples work through the many trials faced in life. My faith and love for people has created in me a heart for those hurting and seeking help. I desire to walk alongside individuals, couples and families in the messy and beautiful periods of life.

As a Temporary Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I am licensed through the Iowa Department of Public Health. For verification and confirmation of my credentials, you are encouraged to visit their website. As required by Iowa law, these credentials must be renewed and remain current through continuing education. While counseling at New Hope, I will be under the observation and guidance of Jacquelyn Joens LMHC. I am also a member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

I love spending time with my husband, family, friends and being a “cat-mom” to Yogi. I enjoy photography, piano, singing, baking, reading and getting caught up on my favorite shows. I love serving at church in our music ministry and living life with our church family through various ministries and activities. My hope and faith in Jesus Christ is the reason I am in this field. He is my foundation and strength and the Great Healer. Time spent in worship, prayer, fellowship and His Word is my source of strength, comfort and wisdom.
